AJ being peacefully handcuffed 35 miles away from Fullerton for a non-violent misdemeanor charge levied 3 months after a protest. Is this what we;re paying our police department to do?
This video shows a man named AJ Redkey being arrested by six undercover members of the Fullerton Police Department in Pasadena this afternoon. AJ must be a pretty dangerous character to have that many officers dedicated to his apprehension, right? Must have committed some egregious offense to have so many resources directed his way…
No. AJ was reportedly arrested for failing to disperse from a protest following the verdicts rendered in the trial of two Fullerton Police Officers charged in the death of Kelly Thomas. AJ was not arrested on January 18*, when the protest took place, although about a dozen others were that day. Instead, AJ was reportedly sent a summons for failure to disperse from the January protest, over three months later.
And now, on May 7, six undercover officers were sent to apprehend AJ in Pasadena, because there evidently weren’t any more pressing law enforcement priorities in Fullerton today.
An officer in the tape confirms that the charge against AJ is a misdemeanor, and that he can be bailed out at the Fullerton jail. However, we have been told that AJ has been moved to the county jail in Santa Ana.
Unless there is more to this story than we now know, unless AJ is somehow involved in some other crime than a non-violent misdemeanor, itself questionable, then one has to conclude that sending six Fullerton police officers 35 miles away to arrest him represents a serious waste of police resources, along with belatedly pressing such a charge in the first place.

This has to be one of FPD’s biggest fubar moments yet. Not only did it take them three months to act, they chose to do nothing until rush hour traffic at OUR expense in another city. AJ is quite visible and there were numerous opportunities to pick him up locally ie Kelly’s Corner recently Kelly’s birthday was celebrated.
Maybe what he was arrested for isn’t the real issue. Maybe they don’t like the fact that he covers and live streams things as they happen. Or maybe it’s just retaliation because he could outrun all of them and the picture of their claim to shame was all over the place.

or maybe it is another way to make it public so they can intimidate people into not protesting. they chose rush hour in a city that is bigger than fullerton and more likely to get news coverage than fullerton. they probably waiting that long because it would make sure that people forgot about the verdict and kelly thomas. it would make aj seem just like some guy looking for trouble.

Thanks for posting on this. Have you read the 150 page police report on the Jan 18th protest? It’s pretty awesome in the scope of resources and to the level of surveillance they have the supporters of Justice for Kelly.
How does one go about finding out how many open warrants the FDP currently has on the books, They must have several hundred. What made this one, only a few weeks old with such a low bail, such a priority? How many open warrants are felony’s vs. minor like this?. Also, are there any other examples of a time when so many resources have gone into arresting a man for a misdemeanor with no drugs or violence involved?
(Update) I was in Santa Ana this morning. A.J. was bailed out from Santa Ana Santa Ana this jail and no other charges were filed. There is nothing more to the story other than retribution because A.J, while disbursing like the fucking wind, as seen in the OC Weekly photo, outran a half dozen bloated cops proving how out of shape our dept is. And kids, when you had to cheat of off guys like A.J. while in high school because you were not very academic, it really hurts the ole ego when the smart dude also outruns you. The lesson here: Steroids make you thick not quick.
FPD has full time officers that do nothing all day but look over social media sights, blogs and read the OC Weekly cover to cover and link to link. That is how they knew to be in Pasadena for Tony Brandenburgs school board meeting on an issue relating to a child with autism being denied equal access. A.J. was there to support the family of the child. That’s what he does.
Is this our post Kelly Thomas police department? There are arsonists on the run, a city that looks like every weekend is spring break, and not one of the six cops who murdered Kelly are in jail.

To all my friends who believe Chief Dan Hughes to be a good man making many positive changes, my advice to you is to stop grading his performance on bell curve based on past chief’s tenure. I agree that he may be less evil than McKinley and not as dumb as Sellers, but without those two disasters as a reference points he does not stand up well at. Ask yourself: Does Dan Hughes but the community first or the police department first? Did all these resources on my friend A.J. make anybody saver last night?. Did they protect anyone’s property? Did they in any way contribute to another incident like the murder of an unarmed homeless man being less likely from happening again. The answer is NO.
This was about PAYBACK and with FPD’s new swagger since the verdict and the public’s lack of attention, I’m sure there will be lot more payback to come.

Baxter, I would like to answer two of your questions above.
Question No. 1.
How many open warrants are felony’s vs. minor like this? I suggest you file a freedom of information request with the city of Fullerton to gain access to the answer.
Question No. 2.
Also, are there any other examples of a time when so many resources have gone into arresting a man for a misdemeanor with no drugs or violence involved? This question is a very easy one to answer. Six FPD officers were at the scene of a totally indefensible, inexcusable, beating death of Kelly Thomas. However, in that case, he was never charged with any crime nor was he ever told that he was being arrested. If you add all the other officers and paramedics that were called to the scene that night you probably have one or two dozen police and fire personnel directly involved that night.
This is just another real time example where are police department is not acting in the best interests of the citizens and the taxpayers of our city. Sending 6 officers to Pasadena for almost a half a day or the full time equivalent of 3 officers for an entire workday for a misdemeanor arrest is both wasteful and potentially dangerous. It is potentially dangerous because 6 on-duty officers were not available to protect the Fullerton public if something really serious occurred here in Fullerton.

Janelle, One of the defendants allowed me to make a copy, but recently I loaned my copy to a reporter at the OC Weekly. Not all the defendants were given a copies. Once the Weekly returns my copy I plan to scan it and get it on line. I will post to this thread and let you know when that is done.
To the post above. I can’t speak for A.J., but I can tell you from observing him that the only thing I have every seen A.J. do in terms of challenging the police is challenge the police to peace.

A little insightful, a little intuitive but to be fair, maybe a little obvious when some thought is applied as to why Pasadena when we all know FPD could have gotten AJ anywhere in Fullerton.
Could it be their embarrassment goes beyond being outrun by AJ to the soon-to-be-released album of the Adolescents, whose lead singer, Tony and his wife, Mary, are the parents battling PUSD over the treatment of their autistic son? There is a song on it, Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold that is awesome and nails Kelly’s killers. The album’s cover shows a homeless man striking a piñata (pignata as my friend, Johnny put it) with Ramos’ face on it.
The protest that AJ was at when arrested was put on by Mary and Tony at a PUSD function. The arrest was so over the top, it caused quite a distraction from the protest as people slipped into the function. Well played Fullerton and Pasadena, well played. Arseholes.

So how many man hours were spent on this particular operation? Pasadena isn’t particularly close to Fullerton even on a good day, and when traffic is heavy a round trip can easily exceed 3 hours, plus the time spent setting up the undercover operation. It is fortunate there wasn’t some emergency in the City that required all hands on deck while this operation was transpiring.

They are not undercover. They are “plain clothes” or “soft clothes” officers not in regular patrol and therefore not depriving the city of its regular patrol compliment of officers. Going anywhere in Orange County or an adjoining county is quite reasonable and not a waste of resources. Don’t commit crimes especially not in Fullerton.
